For years, I was told it was impossible : activating a clay without heating it to 800°C

For years, I was told it was impossible.

Activating a clay without heating it to 800°C.

Triggering a reaction in clay layers through cold activation — at ambient temperature, with minimal energy, and on top of that, electric energy.

And obtaining a binder that actually holds up — literally — in road binders, mortars, concrete blocks, foundations, walls, slabs, precast panels.

For years, the cement industry has held a simple line of reasoning: to make a clay pozzolanic, you have to destroy its crystalline structure. And to destroy that structure, you need heat. A lot of heat. So a kiln. So gas, #CAPEX, and a kaolinitic deposit with over 25% purity.

This logic produced flash calcination. A real step forward compared to clinker. But a step forward that replicates the 20th-century thermal model: centralized, energy-intensive, fossil-dependent, and captive to a scarce raw material.

We took the problem from the other end.

If we can't activate thermally, can we activate cold? If we can't require a premium clay, can we work with every clay — including the waste, the quarry overburden, the washing sludge that no one else values?

The answer took ten years. It's called CCC® — Crosslinked Clay Cement.

Industrialized since 2022.

And today, it comes down to six figures:

→ < 60 kWh/t of activated clay, vs. 500 to 700 kWh/t in flash calcination

→  €5/t of energy OPEX, vs. €22 to €36/t indexed on Brent

→  CAPEX divided by 10: no kiln, no gas treatment, no cooling system

→ Equivalent or higher pozzolanic activity for only 25 kgCO₂eq/t of process emissions with CCC®, the best performance/carbon ratio on the market

→0 kaolinite threshold: we work with the clays others throw away

→ 1,000+ projects already delivered with MCC1®, industrialized since 2022

What these figures really tell, in the end, isn't a rivalry between processes

It's a shift in industrial model.

CCC® opens another path: modular, electric units, for everyone, deployable as close as possible to the local deposit, from 60 kt/year. With greenfield, brownfield, or licensing deployments.

Low-carbon cement isn't meant to remain a premium product for a handful of showcase projects.

It becomes a standard, aligned with the regulatory evolutions ahead, as accessible and competitive as conventional cement. That's the reality we deliver at MATERRUP Low carbon & circular cements.

Everywhere. For everyone."
